A rain shortened edition this week as we head into the final stretch. The Wednesday game between the Isotopes and Wonders was completed, but both the Thursday games were washed out by afternoon thunderstorms. For those of you scoring at home, between June 30 and July 29, we had 15 games scheduled. Eight of them were rained out.
The trouble with the weather, as Mark Twain put it, is everyone complains but no one wants to do anything about it.
We did get in one game this week as the Isotopes bested the Wonders. Goats v. Phils, and Plugs v. Grays ended up all for naught. All we can do is cross our fingers and look to next week's extended forecast.
In the meantime, here's Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie with this season's theme song.
Wonders 3
Isotopes 7
WP: Gary Webber LP: Nabil Hannoush
The Isotopes crept to within a half-game of the idle Uglies with a win over the ageless Wonders™ in the Wednesday night game at Herlihy.
Though the Wonders took an early lead by scoring 1 in the first, the Isotopes came right back to score 2 in the bottom of the frame, taking a lead that they would never relinquish.
They scored 2 more in the 2nd, and 1 in the 4th to go up 5-1. The Wonders would plate 2 in the top of the 6th to make it close at 5-3. But the Isotopes scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th to ice it.
The Wonders threatened in the 3rd but Mike Arbour at 3rd snared a laser beam hit by Dan Alvord. In the 6th, super-sub Steve "Squeeza" Gargone robbed Arbour of extra bases with a diving grab in left center.
On the mound, Gary Webber did Gary Webber things, going the distance and allowing just 5 hits and 3 runs. Nabil Hannoush of the Wonders had another hard-luck performance, going the distance and allowing just 10 hits.
With the season winding down and first place on the line, all eyes will be looking toward next Thursday where the number 2 Isotopes play the number 1 Plug Uglies.
