Revenge is a dish best served cold - or in moderately warm New England temperatures on a weeknight in June.
This week's game were the back end of a scheduling quirk which amounted to a home-and-home series. Teams squared off against the same opponent they had last week. It was the same - but different. As Yogi Berra put it, it was deja vu all over again.
Or if you want to get all biblical: Matthew 20:16 - the last shall be first and the first shall be last.
The Diabolical™ Ken Sloat |
Phillies 6, Wonderboys 3
On Wednesday, the Phillies, losers 10 to 4 to the Wonderboys a week ago, gained revenge by besting the Wonderboys 6-3.
The Diabolical™ Ken Sloat pitched a complete game, bedazzling the Wonders with his usual assortment of slow, slower and slowest curves and a deceptive fastball. Sloat had a had a 1-hit shutout going into the 5th until the Wonders scratch-&-sniffed out 3 runs to make it close. Close ... but still no cigar.
The Phils had the Wonders on their back foot from the get-go, scoring 4 in the top of the first.
Thursday
Dorian Grays 12, Plug Uglies 6
Rebounding from a tough 1-run loss the week before, the Grays put the pedal to the metal early and never looked back. The Grays, who had last 3 of 4 games by one run, scored 4 in the first and then kept the pressure on the entire game. Star of the day was Marty "the Cat" Newman who had 3 hits and 4 RBI.Mike Whately did Mike Whatley things, going the distance and pounding the strike zone.
