Week 15: Phillies shellac Grays; Deja vu weather for Yogi Berra week - more rain, less baseball

The Phillies put an old-fashioned shellacking on the Dorian Grays Wednesday night as Ken "GDIK" Sloat pitched a complete-game shutout and the Phillies bats broke out to a big lead in the first  and never looked back.

Sloat scattered 6 hits over his 6 innings, giving up exactly one hit per inning, and leaving the Grays unable to string anything together. Time and time again, the Phils made the big play to thwart the Grays. They turned three double plays over 6 innings including the final play of the game.

"Sloat and symmetry," said Manager Miracle Max Strubel. "Pitching and defense...it's a beautiful thing."

The Phillies jumped out to a huge 8-run lead in the first, aided by two bases-loaded walks by Grays starter John Malikowski. John "Deuce" Dusenberry broke things open with a 2-RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly by Ron "Tater" Totten and Jack Eisenstadt's rbi single.

Jay Sadowski came on in relief of Malikowski in the 2nd and kept the Phils in check through the 4th.

In the 5th, the Phillies plated 2 more runs on 4 consecutive singles, capped off by Totten's 2 RBI shot. The Phils closed the scoring in the 6th when Craig Allaben doubled with two out, and then came around on back-to-back singles by Paul "Kappy" Kaplan and Paul "Griz" Griswold.

The Grays' best scoring chances ended on good D by the Phils.

In the first, Sadowski's 2-out double was wasted when the next batter lined to Andy "AK" Klepacki at short.

In the 2nd with the bases loaded, Dusenberry turned a liner to first into a double play to end the inning.

In the 4th, Klepacki caught another liner at short and made the long throw to first for a double play.

And on the game's final play, catcher Jon "J.R." Ross ranged back to catch a foul pop up and made the throw to first before the runner could get back to complete the double play.

Isotopes 1
Plug Uglies 1

(rained out in 3rd)

The week's most anticipated match-up, a Thursday night battle between the first-place Plug Uglies and the second-place Isotopes ended early and somewhat anticlimactically due to lightning.  The game had already been delayed 30 minutes due to a late-afternoon rain.

With the game scratched, the Plugs, leading the Topes by 1 1/2 games with now just one game to play,  have clinched the number-one seed heading into the playoffs.

Next Week

Wednesday
Phillies @ Isotopes, Herlihy Field

Thursday
Plug Uglies @ Dorian Grays,  Herlihy Field
Fainting Goats @ Phillies, Shea Field, Agawam

*The post-season seeds are clinched with the exception the 4th and 5th spots. At present, the Goats are in 4th, with a half-game in front of the Phils. But two things to consider. One is the Phils and the Goats have a head-to-head matchup on Thursday. The second is that due to a quirk of scheduling the Phils are playing two games this week.
If the Phils defeat the Isotopes on Wednesday, AND then beat the Goats on Thursday, they will claim 4th place.

Not a lot to work with this week with two-thirds of the games washed out. Here's a photo of some geese at sunset from the Herlihy Field beer pavilion following the Plugs/Topes rainout.
