Week 8 is the unofficial midpoint of our season. The days are longer, the sun at Herlihy is brighter, and the summer skies are clear and blue....Buuuut it doesn't necessarily mean the games are competitive.
Each of the Week 8 games were all blowouts. It happens. The three winning teams scored at least 13 runs, and the average margin of victory was 8.3 runs. For the winning teams, highlights and attaboys abound. For the losing team, it's wait til next week.
The scores aside, as the kids say, it's all good.

Phillies 13
Wonders 5
WP: Max Strubel, LP: Nabil Hannoush.

The Phillies, losers of three straight games by shutout, unloaded a whole lot of frustration on a shorthanded Wonders team in the Wednesday game.
The Phils opened the scoring in the first on a booming triple by Paul "Griz" Griswold to drive in lead-off hitter Paul "Kappy" Kaplan. The run was the first for the Phils in nearly a month, or not since the 5th inning of a 7-6 win over the Goats on May 26.
It would however not be the last.
J.R. Ross would single home Griswold for a 2-0 lead. The Wonders tied it in the bottom of the first. But then the Phils scored 11 straight runs over the next 5 inning before the Wonders would finally score 3 in the bottom of the 6th.
Miracle Max Strubel would go the distance, allowing 4 earned runs and scattering 7 hits to go with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
Nabil Hannoush also notched a complete game, allowing 9 earned runs on 13 hits. He pitched better than the line score indicates, but with the Wonders playing with just 8 fielders, many hits fell in, and the team committed 7 errors behind him.

Fainting Goats 3
Plug Uglies 13
WP: Jeff Whitehead LP: Jeff Neumann

The Goats and Plugs played a crisp, well-played ball game Thursday night with the Plugs leading 1-0. But then the 2nd inning ended, and the game for the Goats went all to hell.
The Plugs broke open the game, taking a 6-0 lead after 4, thanks to a 4-run 3rd that featured 3 straight fly balls turned Herlihy Sun Singles®.
Having broken open the game in the 4th, the Plugs in the 5th  gathered all the pieces, put them in a burlap sack, and them pounded it with a mallet until what was left of the game had been reduced to a really fine dust. Thirteen men came to the plate and nine of them scored. In a word, oof!
For the Plugs, Jeff Whitehead pitched 5, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, and Bill Evans went 4-4 with 3 RBI.

Dorian Grays 11
Isotopes 17
WP: Gary Webber

The Isotopes turned aside the hard-charging Dorian Grays, winners of 4 straight, in a combination slugging and error-fest Wednesday at Herlihy.
Gary Webber pitched another complete game for the win, although it wasn't easy. The 10 runs allowed by the 'Topes are the most they allowed in any game this year.
Offensively, Lundy Bancroft was 5-5 with two stolen bases, and Webber was 3-3 with a double and two walks.
Kevin McElhinney was on base 3 times (single, walk, HBP) and scored 3 times, and David Leslie was 2-3 with 3 RBI.
With the 'Topes and the Plugs each winning, the two teams are pulling away from the rest of the league yet remain locked in their dog-fight for first place in the regular season standings.
