The Whole Ball of Wax: Dorian Grays, Phillies to face off in league championship

Dorian Grays - 11
Wonderboys - 5

On Wednesday, the Dorian Grays took an early lead in the first inning against the top-seeded Wonderboys and then piled on late to win a convincing 11-5 victory.

The Grays, who stumbled down the stretch and who came from behind late to narrowly win the wild card game against the Fainting Goats,  now find themselves in the championship game.

Starter Mike "Knuckles" Whately went 8 full innings, getting a ton of ground-ball outs, and for the most part, staying of trouble. He worked out of one 2-out jam by picking the runner off 2b.

In the 9th, Pres "Buck" Pieraccini came on to close out the show with a beguiling assortment of slow, slower and slowest deliveries that were too much for the Wonders. To combine two different Dennis Eckersley Eck-isms, he was serving up' educated salad'.  The game ended on a weak grounder to first for the unassisted putout.

Phillies - 11
Plug Uglies - 10

The semifinal game between the Phillies and the Plug Uglies had something for everyone. Lots of offense -- 21 runs in the first 5 innings -- clutch pitching, and some great defense when it was needed most.
Tied 8-8 after 3, the Plugs went up by 2 in the 4th, and the Phillies came back with 3 in the 5th to take the lead. As it turned out, that would be it for the scoring.
The Plugs had one run come off the boards in the 2rd. Bill Evans singled, stole 2B and 3B and appeared to score on Greg Elbaum's fly out to left that Yami Baker caught while sliding. But on appeal, the umps ruled Evans left too early and he was called out.
As it turned out, this was, in what turned out to be a 1-run game, a critical call.
Evans got some revenge the next inning when he took a relay throw from center on a single by Andy Klepacki, wheeled and threw a strike to home to get the runner Jim Kerr.

The second half of the game was a clinic on pitching and defense.
Evens pitched 4 2/3, giving up 4 hits and no runs.
"Miracle" Max Struble came on in the 7th, allowing 1 hit and no runs to earn the save. The game ended on called strike three.

The long season comes to an end Wednesday under the lights at MacKenzie. Game time is 6 p.m.
The two teams are evenly matched and eager to play.  Two weeks ago, they battled in a hard-fought extra-inning contest that went 10-innings over two days before the Phillies narrowly prevailed.
The latest line from Vegas is pick-em.
