Week 11: Wonders wear down Plugs; Grays gobsmack Goats

Wednesday's Game

Wonders 13
Plug Uglies 8 (9 inn.)
WP: Nabil Hannoush, LP: Bill Evans

The Ageless Wonders™ bested the Plug Uglies in an extra-inning battle of attrition in the heat and sun at Herlihy Park.
Both pitchers, Nabil Hannoush for the Wonders and Bill Evans for the Plugs, went the distance, and each threw in excess of an estimated 150 pitches. "An outstanding feat for over-50 ballplayers," said Wonders manager Larry Pietras.

The Plugs broke to a 4-1 lead after the first, aided by a booming ground-rule triple by Jeff Cabana that one-hopped into the parking lot, followed by a double by Sam Mead.

The Plugs extended their lead to 8-4 through 4, but the Wonders roared back to tie it at 8 in the top of the 5th. The big hit was a 2-out single over the 3rd base bag by John DeVecchi.
In the bottom of the 5th, Cabana led off with a double and made it to 3rd on a bad throw into the infield. But there he stayed as Hannoush was able to induce 3 weak outs to end the inning.

The teams exchanged zeroes for the next 4 innings until the Wonders scored 5 in the top of the 9th to put it away. With one out in the 9th, Dan Alvord of the Wonders was called out at 2nd trying to extend a single into a double. But Plugs second baseman Eric "Noodles" Bennett confessed that he missed the tag and the call was reversed.  "The epitome of our great league's sportsmanship," Pietras said.
With one out instead of two, the Wonders then erupted for 5 quick runs to cement the win.

Thursday's game

Dorian Grays - 8
Fainting Goats - 5 (5 inn)
WP: Mike "Knuckles" Whately, LP: Ed Webb

The Goats had a 4-2 lead heading into the 4th over the Grays before until the Grays scored 5 in the 4th to take the lead for good.
Whately pitched the final 2 2/3, allowing 1 run to pick up the win in relief of Pres Pieraccini who went the first 2 1/3. Webb allowed just 2 runs through the first three and appeared to be rolling until the 4th when a series of fielding miscues and opportunistic hitting by the Grays caused the wheels to fall off the wagon.

The Goats took a 2-1 lead after one when Jerold Duquette doubled to drive in Tom Sebastyn, and then Ed Webb singled to drive in Duquette.

In the 3rd, the Goats scored twice on successive singles by Sebastyn, Tony Maspo, Duquette and Webb. The Goats missed a chance to do further damage when Jay Sadowski jumped to snag a bases-loaded liner from Paddy Johnson.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Wonders scored 5 runs with 2 outs to take the lead for good. Sadowski went the other way to hit a bases-loaded single to right-center that landed between the fielders.
In the 5th, Pieraccini drove in 2 with a one-out, opposite-field double down the first-base bag.
