Week 7: Grays & Wonders win some, lose some; Phils football-score the Plugs

Mike Dietlin scores the game-winner in Game 1 vs. the Wonderboys

Wednesday

Game 1
Wonders 7, Dorian Grays 8.
WP: Jay "Supe" Sadowski
LP: Bob "Senior" Jacques

Game 2
Wonders 9, Dorian Grays 2
WP: Chris Ciepiela
LP: Mike "Knuckles" Whately

In Game 1, a continuance of a Week 1 matchup that was suspended by darkness, the Grays completed a come-from-behind victory over the Ageless Wonders™ in 5 innings. If you recall, the outcome had been in stasis since it was suspended after 3 full with the Wonders leading 7-6. The managers agreed to play two innings the next time they played to make it an official game.

The Grays broke out first with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th off Larry Pietras and Senior Jacques to take a 3-run lead. The Wonders responded right back in the top of the 5th with 3 runs to tie it up again. The Wonders had the bases loaded with 1 out and had the chance to take the lead, but Mike "Deet" Deitlin snared a liner at short and turned it into a DP to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th with the score tied, Dietlin got on base and moved over to third on a stolen base followed by a wild pitch. Another wild pitch brought him home with the game winner.

In Game 2, Ciepiela and Whately engaged in a pitcher's duel for 4 innings with the Grays leading 1-0.
In the 5th, the Wonders scored 2 to take the lead, and then put it away in the top of the 6th with a  series of bloops, blasts and bleeders.  The Wonders batted around, scoring 7 runs, before Marty "The Cat" Newman made a sliding catch in right to mercifully end the inning.

Thursday

Phillies 14, Plug Uglies 7
WP: Ken Sloat, Sv: Max Strubel
LP: John Adolph

The Phillies scored 10 runs in the first 3 innings, while Ken "The Shootist" Sloat kept the Plugs off balance, allowing only a 3rd inning single by Nolan Anaya.
The Plugs finally got on the board in the 4th scoring 2 runs on an error sandwich, or 2 errors stuffed in between 2 clean singles. (mmmmm, sandwich!)

The Phillies answered with 2 runs in the 5th inning, highlighted by Sloat's 2-rbi double). Sloat (3-4, 2b, 5 rbi) went back to the mound to put up another zero in the bottom of the 5th.

In the top of the 6th, Jack Eisenstadt (2-2, bb) and Paul Kaplan (3-4, rbi) both scored to expand the Phillies lead to 14-2.  In the bottom of the 6th, Sloat's mojo decided to gogo, and the Plugs scored 5 runs on 6 straight hits to make it a 14-7 games.

That was a close as it would ever get as Miracle Max Strubel came on in the 7th to nail down the save.

For Plug highlights, Jack Wileden made two great catches at first, and outfielder Chris Scanlon made a full-on, Ron-Swaboda-like diving catch in right.

For the Phillies, Paul "Griz" Griswold had a stellar game at 3b, as he had all season, and Sloat was a two-way star with outstanding days on the mound and at the plate.
