Week 4 - Phils shave Goats, Grays deadlock Plugs

Ken Sloat of the Phillies with his Death Stare

Wednesday

Phillies 4, Fainting Goats 2 (6 inn.)
WP: K. Sloat, LP: Rick Stacey

Ken 'The Shootist" Sloat of the Phillies pitched a 6-inning complete game to earn a 4-2 victory over the Fainting Goats. The win is the Phils' first of the year, leaving the Goats as the only team yet to make the win column.

By mixing his fastball with his tantalizing slow curve and the more tantalizing slower curve, Sloat kept the Goats off balance and off the basepaths. Three of the 6 innings were of the 1-2-3 variety.

His final line over 6 innings was 2 runs, 1 earned, 5 hits, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts. He also picked off a runner at first. The one earned run was on a booming double by Todd Neumann in the 4th.

For the Goats, Rick Stacy took the loss, going 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He also had 5 Ks. Ed Webb came on in relief for the final two, allowing 1 unearned run. He also had 2 strikeouts.

The Phils took an early lead that they would not relinquish with 2 runs in the 2nd. Both runs scored on two-out singles by Ron Totten and Jim Fogarty. They scored another 2-out run in the 4th on back-to-back doubles by Paul "Griz" Griswold and Jon "J.R." Ross. Paul Kaplan closed out the scoring in the 6th with a double to right that scored Jimmy Kerr.

Thursday

Plug Uglies, 5, Dorian Grays 5 (8 inn.)

It was Plug Uglies early and Dorian Grays late in the Thursday game, leading to a deadlocked score after 8 as the sun set.

The Plugs broke out to a 4-0 lead after the first on a bunch of 40-foot infield singles and a solid RBI single by Mike Olkin that plated Eric "Noodles" Bennett. The would-be 5th run, Chris Scanlon was gunned down at the plate on a throw from behind second by Jay Sadowski to catcher Mike Dietlin.  It didn't seem it at the time but this would loom large as the game continued to the later innings.

"As what seems to happen a lot in over-50, a team that scores a bunch of runs early seems to run out of steam and coast a bit," said Bennett, the Plugs manager. "After that, Knuckles (Mike Whately) shut us down. "

Jon Adolph pitched into the 6th before running out of gas and being replaced by Greg Elbaum
Benji Benjamin and Sam Mead had 2 hits each for the Plugs.
Dietlin was the star of the game for the Grays, going 3 for 4 with a walk and 3 RBI.

Next week:
Wednesday - Goats @ Wonders
Thursday - Grays @ Phils
Off team - Plug Uglies.
